Abstract:Supercontinuum (SC)source is a new source with wide spectrum, high brightness and great harm to the eyes. However, there is no report on the retinal damage and the following healing process. In order to observe the retinal damage induced by SC source and compare with that induced by 532 nm laser. The chinchilla grey rabbit retinas were exposed to paralleled 420~750 nm SC source and 532 nm laser at the power level slightly higher than damage threshold. The incident beam diameter was 3 mm. The exposure duration was 0.1 s. The retinal damage and the repair process were observed by ophthalmoscope and HE staining at 4 h, 1, 3, 7 and 14 d after exposure. The retinal damage caused by SC source and 532 nm laser appeared as small grey spots under ophthalmoscope. 4 hours after irradiation, the outer nuclear layer (ONL)became a condensation state and deepstained, the outer segments adhered to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)layer. Then RPE pigmentation and the loss of damaged ONL cells aggravated progressively. 3 days later, the pigmented cells began to migrate to ONL and INL layers, and the glial cells filled in the damaged area. Thus it can be seen that 420~750 nm SC source mainly damages the ONL and RPE layer of retina, and at a later stage lately the damaged area is filled with pigment granules and the glial cells, which are similar to those of 532 nm laser.
